At Thirdeye Studio, we’re all about fine line tattoos: clean, intentional, and made to last. What happens after your appointment matters just as much as the tattoo itself.
A fresh tattoo is your skin adjusting and starting the healing process. Treat it well, keep it clean, and don’t overthink it. Solid aftercare helps your tattoo heal smoothly, keeps fine lines looking crisp, and prevents unnecessary fading or patchiness.
Why Aftercare Is Important for Fine Line Tattoos
Fine line tattoos rely on clean, precise lines. If the skin doesn’t heal properly, those lines can blur, fade, or heal unevenly. Following aftercare instructions helps your tattoo settle nicely into the skin so it stays looking sharp long-term.
Our Aftercare Basics
Always follow your artist’s specific instructions, but here’s the routine we recommend at Thirdeye Studio:
1. Leave the bandage on
Traditional wrap: about 2–4 hours
2. Wash gently
Wash your hands first
Clean with fragrance-free, antibacterial soap - Dial or Cetaphil work great!
Wash 2x a day during the first week.
3. Moisturize lightly
Use a small amount of tattoo-approved ointment or fragrance-free lotion
Your tattoo should never look shiny or greasy
We recommend using coconut oil, A+D, hustle butter or lubriderm
What to Avoid While Healing
For the first two weeks, avoid:
Swimming
Sun exposure and tanning beds
Tight clothing rubbing the tattoo
Picking, scratching, or peeling
These can all affect healing and cause ink loss!
How Long Does Healing Take?
Surface healing: about 2–3 weeks
Full healing: around 4–6 weeks
Even if it looks healed on top, the skin underneath may still be repairing itself.
Healing Stages (Quick Breakdown)
Days 1–3: Redness & tenderness
Days 4–14: Flaking and itching (don’t scratch!)
Weeks 2–3: Peeling and some dryness
Weeks 4–6+: Tattoo settles and looks clearer
Long-Term Care
Once healed:
Moisturize regularly
Always wear sunscreen on exposed tattoos
Take care of your skin — healthy skin holds ink better
