Why Your Piercing Jewelry Needs a Downsize

When you get a new piercing, the jewelry we start you with is intentionally a little longer than what you’ll wear long-term. That extra length isn’t a mistake — it’s there to give your body room to swell during the first stage of healing.
Once that swelling goes down, though, leaving longer jewelry in can actually slow things down. That’s where downsizing comes in — and it’s an important step that often gets skipped!
So… What Is Downsizing?
Downsizing just means swapping your initial jewelry for a shorter post or a better-fitting piece once your piercing no longer needs the extra space.
Your piercing is still healing at this point — it just doesn’t need all that extra room anymore. A better fit helps everything calm down and heal the way it should.
Why Downsizing Makes a Big Difference
Less Movement, Less Irritation
Jewelry that’s too long tends to move around more than it should. All that movement can cause redness, soreness, and those pesky irritation bumps.
Smoother Healing
Shorter jewelry sits closer to the skin, which helps keep the piercing stable and supported while it heals.
Fewer Snags (and Ouch Moments)
Long posts love to catch on hair, masks, headphones, and clothing. Downsizing helps prevent painful pulls and unnecessary trauma.
It Just Looks Better
Once swelling is gone, downsized jewelry looks clean, intentional, and well-fitted — not bulky or unfinished.
When Is It Time to Downsize?
Every body heals a little differently, but most piercings are ready to be downsized six weeks after your initial appointment. If you can't make it at six weeks, that's okay! Waiting a little bit longer is always better - if you have any questions always feel free to reach out to the studio.
Please Don’t DIY This Part
We know it can be tempting, but changing jewelry too early or choosing the wrong size can cause more irritation than good.
Downsizing should always be done by a professional so we can make sure everything stays clean, comfortable, and properly fitted.
Your 6‑Week Check‑In at ThirdEye Studio
Downsizing isn’t an optional step — it’s part of good aftercare. When it’s done at the right time, your piercing heals better, feels better, and looks better in the long run. Around the 6-week mark, we offer a follow-up check-in to make sure everything’s healing like it should. We’ll check on swelling, placement, and — if your piercing is ready — switch your jewelry to something shorter and better fitting.
Downsizing helps calm irritation, prevents snagging, and keeps your healing on track. It’s all part of the process, and we’re here to help you every step of the way.
